UK Selection Tests

The UK Firefighter
Selection Tests

Every UK fire service requires candidates to pass a series of physical fitness tests before joining. Here's what each test involves, what the standard is, and how to prepare.

8.8
Bleep Test (MSFT)

20-metre shuttle runs to an increasing beep. Most UK services require level 8.8 minimum. Train to reach 9.5+.

12 min
Chester Treadmill Test

Walk at 6.2km/h for 12 minutes with gradient rising to 15%. No holding the rails. VO2 max 42ml/kg/min.

5:47
Equipment Carry

Carry fire service equipment over 25 metres in full PPE. Grip and aerobic endurance. Time limit 5:47.

55kg
Dummy Drag

Drag a 55kg casualty dummy over 30 metres. Drive from the legs — not the arms.

13.5m
Ladder Climb

Climb a 13.5m ladder, perform a leg lock, remove both hands and look down. Tests confidence at height.

Pass
Confined Space

Navigate a tunnel in complete darkness wearing full PPE. Tests claustrophobia and physical ability in tight conditions.
