Train With The
Right Gear

You don't need expensive kit to train for firefighter selection. But the right gear makes training more effective and measurable.

Running Shoes

A stable, cushioned trainer for bleep test and Chester treadmill training. Don't train in fashion trainers — you need grip, support, and cushioning for repetitive shuttle running. Look for a shoe with a flat or low drop for treadmill work.

Heart Rate Monitor

Train at the right intensity every session. A chest strap gives the most accurate reading for VO2 max training. Zone 2 sessions only work if you're actually in Zone 2 — you need a monitor to know.

Pull-Up Bar

A doorframe pull-up bar is essential for building the upper body and grip strength needed for the equipment carry, ladder haul, and operational work. No gym membership required.

Grip Strengthener

Grip is tested in both the equipment carry and ladder climb. A simple hand gripper used daily for 5–10 minutes makes a measurable difference over 8–12 weeks. Use it while watching TV.

Whey Protein

Post-session recovery. A scoop of whey protein within 60 minutes of training supports muscle repair and adaptation. Nothing more complex than this is needed.

Resistance Bands

Useful for warm-up activation, face pulls (shoulder health), and hip exercises. Lightweight and easy to use at home. A set of 3–4 resistance levels covers most needs.
